Paving the Way
Jamie Porter, Mareena Robinson Snowden and Ciara Sivels were each the first black woman to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear engineering from their respective colleges. Now, they work in three different sectors at APL, dedicating their time and their brains to important challenges facing the nation — with an eye toward furthering a sea change in their wake.

Nancy Chabot Named Meteoritical Society Vice President
Nancy Chabot, a planetary scientist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, was elected vice president of the Meteoritical Society, an international organization that promotes planetary science research and education with a focus on meteorites and other extraterrestrial materials that further the understanding of the solar system’s origins.

JHU Researchers Begin to Tackle Bias in AI Used in Disease Diagnosis and Health Care
Every year, millions of patients receive medical diagnoses, care and treatment plans based on algorithms. But a recent study finding a lack of ethnic diversity in the source data for one widely used treatment-decision algorithm has researchers suggesting that similar tools used by hospitals, health care systems and government agencies could be doing more harm than good.

NASA Selects Johns Hopkins APL-Led Discovery Mission Proposal for Further Funding
NASA announced today four mission proposals that will move forward for further consideration in its Discovery Program, which funds low-cost space exploration missions that do not exceed $500 million. All four mission teams feature scientists from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, including a mission to Jupiter’s volcanic moon Io that would be designed, built and co-led by APL.

APL Black History Month Highlights the Voting Rights Movement
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory kicked off its Black History Month celebration on Feb. 5 in APL’s Kossiakoff Center. Spoken word performer Lady Brion opened the event with an original poem to honor this year’s theme, “African Americans and the Vote.”
