Professional Development
Where Continuous Growth Is a Way of Life
We value continued education and provide generous educational assistance for staff members who want to further their work-related education.
Industry-Leading Education Assistance
We'll pay your tuition for up to 24 credit hours per academic year for a relevant degree or part-time coursework. Staff members in part-time doctoral programs are eligible for 200 hours of paid leave per year while in the dissertation phase, for up to three years.
Opportunities for External Development
Do you aspire to publish papers, attend conferences, and build your professional community? We can help you with that that. We encourage staff members to join professional organizations, attend conferences and training programs, and publish papers. APL provides its employees with the resources and funding to pursue external professional development.
On-Site Learning Opportunities
Our Talent Development office partners with internal audiences to design and develop learning and professional development solutions that advance the Lab’s mission. We also partner with the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering on the Engineering for Professionals program to offer convenient, on-site evening classes and other learning opportunities for a relevant degree.
From a dedicated diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) curriculum to formal mentorships to leadership development programs, APL offers many ways for staff members to develop inclusive practices, bolster innovation, and advance in their careers. Our interactive DEI curriculum includes courses exploring diverse inclusion, nonconscious bias, and proactive bystander intervention. We offer formal mentorship programs for staff members in all roles, as well as the Strategic Mentoring Cohort, in which up-and-coming staff members are provided opportunities for training, visibility, and leadership roles under the guidance of senior leaders. Our Leadership Attributes clarify expectations for leaders, while our Leadership Competency Model helps staff members understand and develop the capabilities necessary to lead.
JohnWorking at APL gave me the ability to go back to school, learn new skills, and earn additional degrees. I've taken advantage of the program to get two master's degrees.
