Semmel Named to Power 30 Higher Education List
Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) Director Ralph Semmel was recently named to The Daily Record’s second annual Power 30 Higher Education List.
Semmel, the Laboratory’s director since 2010, joined college and university presidents and senior administrators, policymakers, advocates for education access and equity and others “on the cutting edge of research and the liberal arts,” the magazine explained.
Other Johns Hopkins University leaders joining Semmel on the list included Ron Daniels, university president; Sunil Kumar, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs; and Fred Bronstein, dean of the Peabody Institute.
“It’s an honor to be included among this list of exceptional leaders from across the state,” Semmel said. “At APL, we take great pride in our role as a university affiliated research center, operating at the intersection of industry, government and academia. We strive to create a working environment that fosters a culture of innovation and a commitment to collaboration. The Laboratory promotes bold thinking and experimentation by all of our staff members, who continually work to solve complex research, engineering and analytical problems that present critical challenges to our nation.”
APL is the nation’s largest university affiliated research center, providing U.S. government agencies with deep expertise in specialized fields to support national priorities and technology development programs.
The Power 30 Higher Education List was chosen by The Daily Record’s editorial team, with feedback from readers and other stakeholders. “Maryland has justly earned a reputation as home to some of the finest institutions of higher education in the nation,” said Daily Record editor Thomas Baden Jr. “The men and women who make up our second annual Power 30 Higher Education List are among the reasons why.”
Semmel, Daniels, Kumar and Bronstein appear in a special insert in the magazine’s April edition, part of a series of 2022 Daily Record Power Lists showcasing influential figures in law, higher education, health care, business, financial services and other fields.
