Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory Names Krill as Assistant Director for Programs

Jerry A. Krill of Ellicott City, Md., has been appointed Assistant Director for Programs at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Md., and in that capacity will oversee APL's more than 400 programs.

Krill previously led one of the Laboratory's larger departments, Power Projection Systems, directing research in air and missile defense systems, as well as guiding the Lab's information systems research. In addition to his appointment as Assistant Director, Krill will serve as the Laboratory's Chief Quality Officer, and as such is responsible for seeing that APL maintains the highest possible quality products and services.

He joined the Laboratory staff in 1973 and was instrumental in developing the Navy's Cooperative Engagement Capability system that links air defense systems within a battle group. He holds several patents in microwave and computer security technology.

Krill was recently chosen as an Innovator of the Year by the Baltimore Daily Record for his optical communications network innovation. This past spring, his design for 3-D virtual reality technology won top Laboratory honors as its 2004 Information Science Invention of the Year.

Krill holds a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland. He serves on the Naval Studies and Defense Science Board panels and is a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the National Defense Industrial Association.
