Former Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead Joins Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Board
Former Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead has joined The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory’s Board of Managers. As Chief of Naval Operations from 2007 to 2011, Roughead served as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and advised the President and Secretary of Defense on naval matters and national military strategy.
During his tenure as CNO, he successfully guided the Navy through a period of significant transition in national security, fiscal and personnel matters. He led efforts to stabilize and accelerate ship and aircraft procurement plans, strengthen the Navy’s capability and capacity in ballistic missile defense and unmanned systems, and increase the Navy’s focus on cybersecurity and information assurance.
Roughead also held six operational commands over the course of his naval career and is one of only two officers in U.S. naval history to have commanded fleets in the Pacific and Atlantic. Ashore he served as the commandant of the U.S. Naval Academy, the Navy’s Chief of Legislative Affairs, and Deputy Commander, U.S. Pacific Command.
As a member of APL’s Board of Managers, Roughead will join other leaders from the military, public service, private industry and academia who advise the Laboratory.
