Bio
BioDr. Matthew S. Fifer is a senior engineer and leads the Neuroscience Group within APL’s Research and Exploratory Development Department, with research spanning neural interfaces, connectomics, neurally inspired artificial intelligence, and behavioral quantification for mental health applications. Dr. Fifer’s research focuses on implanted neural interfaces, with special emphasis on decoding motor and language intent from electrocorticographic (ECoG) implants as well as delivering intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) through microelectrode arrays. He is on the leadership team for the Cortical Communication (CortiCom) trial, which is testing neural communication systems for patients with locked-in syndrome. He also coleads the Bidirectional Cortical Neuroprosthetic System (BiCNS) trial, where he develops brain stimulation strategies to enable artificial touch in virtual environments and from robotic limbs.
