NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has made its first detection of its next flyby target, the Kuiper Belt object nicknamed Ultima Thule, more than four months ahead of its New Year’s 2019 close encounter.

Parker Solar Probe Launches on Historic Journey to Touch the Sun
Hours before the rise of the very star it will study, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe launched from Florida Sunday, Aug. 12, to begin its journey to the Sun, where it will undertake a landmark mission. The spacecraft will transmit its first science observations in December, beginning a revolution in our understanding of the star that makes life on Earth possible.

APL, Navy Teaming Up to Improve Military Health Care
Health systems engineers from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, are working with the Navy to expand the role of Navy hospital corpsmen stateside and improve access to medical care for military members through a pilot program called Connected Corpsmen in the Community (CCC).

Parker Solar Probe Prepares to Head Toward Launch Pad
The first mission to touch the Sun, Parker Solar Probe — designed, built and managed by APL for NASA — has cleared the final procedures in the clean room before its move to the launch pad, where it will be integrated onto its launch vehicle, a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy.
