The new standard represents the commercialization of a technology known as the High Level Architecture (HLA) that defines a common framework for organizing independent, distributed simulations into a larger, single simulation known as a federation.

A special instrument, called the Student Dust Counter, has been added to NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. Designed by students at the University of Colorado at Boulder, the device will detect dust grains produced by collisions between asteroids, comets and Kuiper Belt objects.
