DeLaHunt Honored by JHU Diversity Leadership Council

Sylvie DeLaHunt, a guidance, navigation and control engineer in the Air and Missile Defense Department, was among those honored at the Johns Hopkins Diversity Leadership Council’s 16th annual Diversity Recognition Awards, held May 15 on JHU’s Homewood campus.

Since 2003, the Diversity Leadership Council (DLC) has formally recognized faculty, staff members and students from the various Hopkins campuses who demonstrate a commitment to the advancement and celebration of diversity.

DeLaHunt has been actively engaged in efforts to encourage, support and celebrate both current and prospective female staff members of APL as well as the broader Johns Hopkins STEM communities. In October 2017, she led a workshop titled “Overcoming Obstacles Facing Women in STEM,” at the DLC’s 14th Annual Diversity Conference. She has participated in K-12 outreach through the APL STEM Office, volunteered for diversity events and fundraisers at the Laboratory, and engaged with local collegiate women in STEM organizations.

She currently serves as the Diversity and Inclusion Chair-Elect for the APL chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE@APL). Through that organization, she led a volunteer planning committee to host APL’s lab-wide Women’s History Month activities for March 2018, including events highlighting the contributions of staff members and collaborations with the Asian American Heritage Club and African American Culture Club.

She also worked with the SWE@APL Outreach Chairs to host the third Annual SWE@APL College Visit Day in November 2017, which brought more than 30 students from seven local colleges and universities to APL for networking, facility tours and technical talks. She oversaw approximately 70 APL volunteers and helped double the number of attendees from previous years by leading efforts to expand advertising to all local women in STEM student groups, in addition to collegiate SWE chapters, and reworking the event organization.
