Bio
BioDr. Thomas Lawton is a senior staff scientist with a background in protein biochemistry. His research involves characterizing proteins and developing them for use in novel applications. Dr. Lawton is an expert in expressing, purifying, and using biophysical tools to characterize proteins. His skills also include making different types of biological materials, such as DNA molecules, lipid nanodiscs, liposomes, and cell-free extracts for protein synthesis. Currently, he leads two research efforts related to living sensor development and marine biology. Additional areas of expertise include working with challenging targets such as membrane proteins, air-sensitive proteins, and proteins with complex cofactors (especially those with metallocofactors).
