Bio
BioDr. Brendan Croom is a senior scientist and project manager with more than 10 years of experience in experimental solid mechanics, nondestructive evaluation, additive manufacturing (AM), high-throughput materials characterization, and machine learning. Since joining APL in 2020, Dr. Croom has developed accelerated X-ray computed tomography methods with improved sensitivity to detect defects, established machine-learning tools to rapidly link AM processing conditions to defect formation and properties, and led efforts to design high-throughput mechanical testing and corrosion testing methods for materials subjected to high-temperature, seawater, and arctic environments. He also serves as a subject-matter expert in AM process and part qualification and is involved in efforts to reduce testing requirements and qualify new nondestructive evaluation methods for AM parts. As project manager, he leads a portfolio of projects related to qualification of advanced manufacturing techniques, with a focus on integrating advanced computational modeling, in situ sensing, and novel testing methods to simplify part qualification and acceptance.
