Scientists Marvel at First Returns from Juno Mission to Jupiter

New Research Determines How Rainfall Shaped Mars

A novel method of using nanoplatforms to control diagnostic drug delivery and therapeutic compounds that allow nanoparticle structures to perform better (known as the Surface Modified Anti-cancer Responsive Theranostic method, or SMART) was announced as APL’s Invention of the Year during a ceremony May 2 on APL’s campus.

Rock Star: Asteroid Named after APL’s Carolyn Ernst
After years of studying asteroids, Carolyn Ernst now has one of the big space rocks named after her. The International Astronomical Union and Minor Planet Center have approved the name “Ernst” for the asteroid designated 11008, honoring the contributions of the Space Exploration Sector planetary scientist.

APL Researchers Suggest New Picture of the Sun’s Interaction with the Galaxy
New data from Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) experiments on NASA’s Cassini and Voyager spacecraft, combined with measurements from NASA’s Interstellar Boundary Explorer, suggests that the heliosphere — the bubble of the sun’s magnetic influence that surrounds the inner solar system — may be much more compact and rounded than previously thought.

Johns Hopkins APL Collaborates with Facebook’s Building 8 to Develop Breakthrough Brain–Computer Interface Technologies
For the past decade, APL has led the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Revolutionizing Prosthetics (RP) Program, and in the process created the most advanced neurally controlled prosthetic limb in the world. Using this technology, patients whose bodies are paralyzed have been able to feed themselves, reached out to loved ones and even control a flight simulator.
