Networks measure interactions. The last twenty years witnessed an explosion of network methods applied to every discipline. From early examples like the web graph, we now study networks made from neurons in the brain, banking transactions, characters in novels and films, and species interacting in an ecosystem, to name a few.
Although networks are everywhere, many are invisible. The secrets behind these hidden networks are only now being revealed. We give a guided tour of network science and offer insights into what makes networks tick.
Dr. Anthony Bonato's research is in graph theory and network science. He authored over 150 papers with over 120 co-authors. He is the author of seven books, with the latest being Dots and Lines: Hidden Networks in Social Media, AI, and Nature, published in May 2025 by Johns Hopkins University Press. Bonato is currently a full Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Toronto Metropolitan University. Bonato has a passion for writing and communicating mathematics, and his words were published in Nature, Salon, and The Conversation.
