The Department of Defense Research Directorate says that “STEM underpins DoD's ability to defend the Nation and to assure the vitality of the Nation’s defense industrial base.” The directorate lists the following U.S. government strategic efforts to educate the U.S. workforce with the “STEM expertise necessary to develop technological solutions in an ever-changing threat environment”:

The national security workforce is 40% “high-STEM” [having a significantly high level of STEM knowledge]; 39% percent of jobs in the professional, scientific, technical services, and telecommunications industries qualify as high-STEM. — “The Hidden STEM Economy,” a report by the Brookings Institution
