Applied Physics Lab Named One of Baltimore’s ‘Best Places to Work’

For the third year in a row, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Md., has been named to Baltimore magazine’s “Best Places to Work” list.

APL is among 25 companies featured in the magazine’s February 2012 issue as “workplaces that employees really want to roll out of bed for, ones with a bright future and with serious rewards.” The Lab was cited specifically as “a place where extremely smart and talented people are set free to do important, innovative work,” and enjoy benefits including employee tuition reimbursement, retirement plan contribution matching, a dependent scholarship program and recreation facilities.

“It’s great to have APL recognized for the third year in a row as an extraordinary place to work,” notes APL Director Ralph Semmel. “But it’s our extraordinary people who work each day to make this nation more secure that the award really honors – they’re why we are a “Best Place to Work.” I thank Baltimore magazine for recognizing them.”

Last year, APL was named to the magazine’s “Best Places to Work” Hall of Fame.

The Applied Physics Laboratory, a not-for-profit research division of The Johns Hopkins University, solves complex research, engineering, and analytical problems facing our nation. APL works on more than 600 programs that make critical contributions to critical challenges in national security and space science. APL moved to Howard County in 1954 from Silver Spring, Md., where it opened its doors in 1942. Today, APL has approximately 5,000 staff members, making it Howard County’s largest private employer.
