Sea Control
Johns Hopkins APL’s Sea Control Mission Area supports U.S. Navy and joint service missions, delivering essential capabilities to project military power on, under, and above the seas. We focus on four key areas to revolutionize maritime superiority: maritime domain situational awareness, kinetic and non-kinetic effects to deter aggressors and deescalate hostilities, force survivability against near-peer threats, and effective and affordable rapid prototyping and modernization. We develop and field innovative solutions that maintain global access for U.S. naval forces and deny adversaries use of the maritime domain.

Johns Hopkins APL and Navy Chart Next Steps to Accelerate 3D-Printing Advancements
To address manufacturing challenges, the Navy is prioritizing the development and fielding of additive manufacturing systems, often called 3D printers, to supplement traditional casting methods and accelerate submarine production. APL is leading the charge in the development of tools and strategies that will speed up and improve inspection of additively manufactured parts.

Sailors 3D-Print Critical Component at Sea Using Johns Hopkins APL-Installed Hybrid Manufacturing System
Sailors aboard the USS Bataan turned the additive manufacturing at sea concept into reality after successfully fabricating and installing a stainless steel sprayer plate to repair the USS Bataan’s ballasting system. The machinists used a hybrid manufacturing system that was developed and installed on the ship with support from APL and Naval Sea Systems Command, allowing the ship to avoid costly repairs and resume operations.

Johns Hopkins APL Undersea Warfare Expert Earns National Defense Industrial Association Bronze Medal
Lee Rogers, chief engineer of the Sea Control Mission Area at APL, was awarded the Bronze Medal Award for Technical Achievement in Undersea Warfare at the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) 2023 Undersea Warfare Fall Conference.
