Contribution to the Cooperation

Contributing to the Cooperation for Global Maritime Security is not about monetary donations.  Rather, participants share ideas and information that increase the level of cooperation between national, international and commercial organizations needed to secure the seas against transnational threats, terrorism, piracy and environmental degradation.  This information can be shared via this website, through official channels or at recurring symposiums sponsored by an international coordinating group.

The Cooperation encourages the evolution of an international maritime network that will act in ways similar to a “neighborhood watch” program.  Under this construct, participants observe their surroundings and report suspicious activity to local, national or international law enforcement agencies that will provide tracking guidance or, if required, integrated response capability.  Participation in the Cooperation is loosely guided by the following criteria:

  • At-will participation to increase security in the global maritime domain

  • Open to commercial, academic, government and military organizations, as well as individuals

  • Active or passive participation in line with individual national security interests

  • Shaped by the principles of the "neighborhood watch" program...common security for the common good

  • Willingness to share ideas and information

The Cooperation will also be guided by the precept that while key principles are formulated at the global level, implementation requires action at the regional level.
