Johns Hopkins APL Names Preston Dunlap Mission Area Executive

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, named Preston Dunlap as National Security Analysis (NSA) Mission Area Executive on January 11, 2016.
National Security Analysis, one of 11 mission areas at APL, provides innovative cross-cutting analyses, research, and integrated technology development that impact the broader national security enterprise, increase the effectiveness of national security operations and missions, and enable informed senior leader decision making.
“Preston’s appointment is made in recognition of his broad analytical expertise, demonstrated executive leadership and exceptional reputation in the national security analysis community,” said National Security Analysis Department Head Mark Lewellyn.
Dunlap joined APL in 2014 as a National Security Fellow in the National Security Analysis Department, where he oversaw cross-cutting initiatives and built partnerships within the Laboratory and across government to foster innovation in analysis, technology, exercises, operational planning and senior decision making.
Prior to arriving at APL, Dunlap was a career member of the Senior Executive Service in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. There, he served more than 11 years in a variety of roles, including Director of Program Analysis, Chief of Staff to the Director of Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation, Deputy Director of the Simulation and Analysis Center, and Deputy Manager for Information Management and Analysis.
Dunlap earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science and political science from Duke University and his master’s of science degree in operations research and management science from George Mason University.
In recognition of his contribution to national security, Dunlap’s awards include the Secretary of Defense Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service and multiple citations of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service and Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence.
