Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory Celebrates Black History Month

The public is invited to a series of Black History Month events at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md. The calendar includes films, musical performances, and talks focusing on education and the contributions of minorities to science and engineering.

• Feb. 1: The Morgan State University Theatre presents "Miss Evers' Boys," based on the events of the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiments conducted in the 1920s and 1930s in Macon County, Alabama. 11:30 a.m. Kossiakoff Conference and Education Center.
• Feb. 5: APL TV Production Writer Kojo Asafo-Agyei presents a Documentary on Ghana, based on his trip home after 30 years to document the changes in that country. Event includes a Q&A. 11:30 a.m. Parsons Auditorium, Building 1.
• Feb. 9: New York Polytechnic-educated electrical engineer turned entrepreneur Wilbert Murdock will speak on leveraging young people's affinity for high-tech toys and connecting the technology they use to the sports and pop cultures they love to enhance tech's appeal as a field of study. 11:30 a.m. Parsons Auditorium, Building 1.
• Feb. 12: U.S. Marine Captain Vernice Armour, the first African American Female Combat Pilot, will speak. 11:30 a.m. Parsons Auditorium, Building 1.
• Feb. 16: APL Colloquium Speaker—Dr. Isaiah Blankson, Senior Technologist, NASA Glenn Research Center. 2 p.m. Parsons Auditorium, Building 1.
• Feb. 18: Free concert by the Peabody Conserva­tory singers, with a reception to follow. Kossiakoff Conference and Education Center at 3 p.m.
• Feb. 19: A showing of "First Person Singular: John Hope Franklin," a film examining the life and work of one of the most highly-respected historians of the African-American experience in the U.S. 11:30 a.m. Gibson Library, Room 1.
• Feb. 23: Dr. Valerie Wilson, associate dean of Brown University's graduate school, clinical professor of community health and executive director of the Leadership Alliance, speaks; followed by an APL Gospel Choir performance. 11:30 a.m. Kossiakoff Conference and Education Center auditorium.
• Feb. 24: Staff Awards Ceremony and Recognition Banquet. 6:00 p.m. until midnight. Kossiakoff Conference and Education Center. Suggested donation: $35. Contact Mr. Hires for tickets.
