Nicholas J. Langhauser is the new Chief Financial Officer and head of the Business Services Department (BSD) at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Md.

BSD, comprising 170 employees, provides an array of services, including accounting, finance, auditing, contracts, subcontracts, purchasing, business services and material distribution. Additionally, BSD manages APL's multiple prime contracts with agencies of the U.S. government to ensure that all business transactions are conducted in compliance with good business practices and with the regulations of the federal government.

Langhauser has more than two decades of experience in finance and accounting, including more than 10 years at three defense contracting firms: Martin Marietta, SEDCO Systems, Inc., and Grumman Aerospace Corp. He joined APL in 1991 as the financial manager for the National Security Technology Department (NSTD). He went on to serve at the Lab as supervisor of financial planning, supervisor of accounting and finance and then back to NSTD as its assistant department head for operations and chief of staff.

Ruth E. Nimmo, the Lab's assistant director for operations, said Langhauser is well-respected in the APL community for his commitment, integrity and creative thinking. "He brings to this position a broad base of knowledge in federal contracting and cost accounting as they apply to research and development activities," she said. "He also brings leadership skills demonstrated by involvement in several departments at APL and contributions to enterprise-level councils, committees and study teams."

Langhauser's near-term challenges will be to guide the Lab's financial planning process and lead the implementation of an enterprise resource management planning system that will integrate all departments and functions across the Lab onto a single computer system. "We are making major investments in business management software, and Nick is jointly responsible with the chief information officer for the success of the project," said Nimmo.

A resident of Bel Air, Md., Langhauser has an MBA from Long Island University and a bachelor's degree in accounting from Brockport University, Brockport, N.Y.
