Bio
BioDr. Matthew S. Fifer is a senior staff engineer and leads the Neuroscience Group within APL’s Research and Exploratory Development Department, which includes teams researching neural interfaces, connectomics, neurally-inspired AI, and human-machine teaming. Dr. Fifer’s research focuses on implanted brain–machine interfaces, with special emphasis on intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) through microelectrode arrays, and decoding motor and language intent from electrocorticographic (ECoG) implants. As part of the Bidirectional Cortical Neuroprosthetic System (BiCNS) trial, he developed brain stimulation strategies for artificial touch with robotic limbs and in virtual environments. Dr. Fifer also co-leads a team that is creating neural communication systems for patients with locked-in syndrome, as part of the CortiCom trial.
